China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), located in the historic city of Nanjing, was founded in 1936 as China’s first independent four-year National College of Pharmacy, the earliest public institution for higher pharmaceutical education. Over time, through mergers (notably combining with a traditional Chinese medicine college in 1986) and institutional restructuring, it evolved into the modern university now known as China Pharmaceutical University. CPU is directly administered by China’s Ministry of Education and is one of the national “Project 211” key universities; it also belongs to the “985 Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform” and since 2017 has been included among the national “Double First-Class” institutions. As a specialized, research-oriented university with a strong pharmaceutical heritage, CPU remains distinguished in pharmacy and biomedical sciences, while also offering a broader portfolio across life sciences, biomedicine, traditional Chinese medicine, biotechnology, and related disciplines. The university comprises 16 schools/departments and offers 31 undergraduate programs, multiple master’s and professional degree options, doctoral and post-doctoral training, with its core strengths centered on pharmacy and traditional Chinese pharmacy. With robust research infrastructure, including national key laboratories and innovation platforms, CPU plays a leading role in new-drug development, biomedical research, and the training of pharmaceutical professionals, and continues to contribute significantly to China’s public health, pharmaceutical industry, and biomedical academic community.
