Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT) is a century‑old, key public university in Taiyuan, Shanxi. Its origins date back to 1902, when the Western Learning School of the Shanxi Grand Academy was founded, making it one of the earliest higher education institutions in modern China. Over time, it evolved through several stages: in 1953 it became the independent Taiyuan Institute of Technology under the Ministry of Higher Education; in 1962 it came under the administration of Shanxi Province; in 1984 it was renamed Taiyuan University of Technology; and in 1997 it merged with the Shanxi Institute of Mining (founded in 1958) to form the present TYUT. In that same year, it was selected for Project 211, marking its status as a key national university. In 2017, TYUT was included in China’s “Double First‑Class” initiative, advancing its development in both teaching and research. Today, TYUT is a multi‑disciplinary, engineering‑oriented university with strong strengths in engineering, materials science, chemistry, and more.
